Composing Lyrics

- Write your own lyrics for a pop song:
- How will you structure your piece?
- You must do at least 1 chorus & 2 verses
- Your lyrics can be about any topic you wish
- Verse: Tells the story – usually 4 lines
- Chorus: Catchy rhyming phrases, sing-along part – hook,
Repetitive lyrics, Has the same words each time
- At the end of each sentence write how many syllables are
in that sentence; You should try to include the same number of syllables on
each line (6-10)
- Using the lyrics you have written, compose your own melody:
- When you sing, try to tap out or move to a beat - get a good rhythm
- Make sure you use the same melody for V1 & V2
- The chorus should be different and have a hook

What makes good pop song lyrics?:
- Rhythm
- Rhyming
- Syllables – sounds in a word: Between 6 and 10 per line
Topics:
- Decide a topic/story
- Stimulus: Poem? Painting? Place? Emotion?
- Your lyrics could be about everyday life or
something you feel strongly about, e.g. school, homework, sports, friends,
environment, someone close to you, something on the news, etc.
Song Titles:
- Think about how the song title can reveal about
what the song will be about & how interesting it song will be; it will often
be the hook
