Film Music Listening Task

Listen to the one of the pieces of film music – Jaws or Psycho – then answer the following questions:

  1. Which piece did you listen to?
  2. Use single words or short phrases to describe the images/mood/atmosphere the music could suggest to you
  3. List the composition devices used in this piece of music (the ones you have learnt and used in the last 2 lessons)
  4. Describe how the following elements of music are used to create the mood of the piece:
    1. Pitch – how does the range of pitches affect the intended mood?
    2. Rhythm – what effect do the different rhythms have on the mood?
    3. Tempo – how does the speed of the piece affect the mood?
    4. Dynamics – how are the range of volumes used?
    5. Instruments & Sounds – which sounds are used and why?
    6. Texture (layers) – how are the different ideas and sounds combined to create the mood?
