Film Music Listening Task
Listen to the one of the pieces of film music – Jaws or Psycho – then answer
the following questions:
- Which piece did you listen to?
- Use single words or short phrases to describe the images/mood/atmosphere
the music could suggest to you
- List the composition devices used in this piece of music (the ones you
have learnt and used in the last 2 lessons)
- Describe how the following elements of music are used to create the mood
of the piece:
- Pitch – how does the range of pitches affect the intended mood?
- Rhythm – what effect do the different rhythms have on the mood?
- Tempo – how does the speed of the piece affect the mood?
- Dynamics – how are the range of volumes used?
- Instruments & Sounds – which sounds are used and why?
- Texture (layers) – how are the different ideas and sounds combined to
create the mood?
